The Dune Chronicles by Frank Herbert

The Official Dune Web Site
Of course ! The very name and site theme of Arrakis is based on Frank Herbert's Dune Chronicles. The Dune Chronicles is an epic SIX book masterpiece and in my humble opinion :) the very best in its genre.

October 1999 : House Atriedes : A Prequel has been written by Frank Herbert's son Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, based on Frank Herbert's notes.

November 2000 : House Harkonnen : The second book of the Prequel to Dune written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

October 2001 : House Corrino : The third book of the Prequel to Dune written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson

An Interview with Frank Herbert

Professor Willis E. McNelly author of "The Dune Encyclopedia" recorded and transcribed an interview that he had with Frank Herbert and his wife Beverly in 1969. The text of the interview is available at Sexek.

Book 1 : Dune

The year is 10191, the story is centred around Arrakis, also known as Dune. It is a desert planet with a valuable, unique commodity, the spice Melange. Melange is used to enable space travel and "extend life and expand conciousness" (you really need to read the book to get the full meaning of this !). Ultimate power over Melange production is ultimate power in the universe. The inhabitants of this universe are humans, living in a feudal society of Great Houses (rather like Clans) ruled by Dukes and Barons who answer to the Emperor and the council of Great Houses.

Key Characters are:
Paul Atriedes, son of Duke Leto Atreides.
Shaddam IV, The Emperor of the Known Universe.
House Atreides, led by Duke Leto Atreides and his aides.
House Harkonnen, led by Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and his aides.
The Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, a pervasive and powerful organisation of women with a breeding program to create a super being, the Kwisatz Haderach.
The Spacing Guild, holder of the space travel monopoly.
The Fremen, indigenous inhabitants of Arrakis.

Plot Summary (Yeah, Right :)
The Emperor is worried that Duke Leto and House Atreides have trained an army superior to his elite Sardaukar troops and conspires with Baron Harkonnen to eliminate the Duke and House Atreides. However, they did not expect the "premature" product of the Bene Gesserit's breeding program and the Fremen's influence in their plan.

David Lynch's "Dune" Movie

In 1984, the movie "Dune" based on this book was released, directed by David Lynch and starring Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides. By most standards, the movie did not do well, just like most other movies based on books. Due to the time limitations of the format, it merely hints at the richness and painstaking detail of the story. Try as it did, the movie just could not provide enough detailed information to the many who have not read the book, for them to understand the story. That is probably why it failed. On top of that many fans of the book felt betrayed, that the movie had somehow misrepresented the story. The theatrical trailers did however, inspire me to buy the book and that led me to buy and read the following five books and the two prequels (and the third when it is published). I am indebted to the movie for that reason. Nevertheless, if you are a Dune fan, I would consider the movie a must have, if only to inspire you to read the book again...and again :).

The Prequels to the Dune Chronicles

Dune : House Corrino

Dune : House Corrino Cover
The third book of Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's prequels to the Dune Chronicles, House Corrino, was released in September 2001. Officially it was supposed to be October 2001 but I found it in London and of course I had to pick it up :)
My initial reaction ? Great book, very hard to put down (even at 3AM on a weekday), I started reading it on the flight home (13 hours) and finished it within two weeks. Of course the events in House Corrino lead directly to the events in Frank's Dune. There were a few things in the story which I felt was "unnecessary" to the story and seemed like "padding" the make the story run a little longer. Additionally some of these "events" of course would never get mentioned in Frank's books and lead to discontinuity. These are:
WARNING ! SPOILERS AHEAD !
The kidnapping of baby Paul in the Imperial Palace of Kaitain. In my view, Piter, as a mentat would have realised that escape would have been impossible and logically should have killed Jessica and Paul. This of course would be impossible so this story wasn't necessary and Anirul could have been killed off some other way instead.

The attack on Caladan by Count Moritani and Rabban. This too doesn't add to the story and Moritani's "disappearance" in Frank's following books of course leads to discontinuity. It is also questionable that the Guild would have allowed the transport of Moritani's and Rabban's attack force to Caladan, while supporting the Atriedes liberation of Ix.

There are other important events which are central to the prequels (and are necessary) but lead to discontinuity when taken with Frank's original Chronicles. These include:
The Amal Project and the Tleilaxu, "disappear" in Dune and reappear briefly to produce Duncan's Ghola in "Dune Messiah". It is quite strange that having come so close to an artificial spice, the Tleilaxu never attempt it again. Another discontinuity is that Axolotl tanks were revealed to be "pregnant" females (something which Frank kept mysterious in the original Chronicles) and this discovery is totally forgotten.
House and Rhombur Vernius "disappear". Ix is only mentioned in the Chronicles as a source of clever devices. It is inconceivable that House Vernius, in such a central role in the prequels, is never again mentioned. Even if House Vernius ends with Prince Rhombur, Ix would have remained a staunch Atreides ally.
These loose ends, do mar the ending of the prequels when taken in the context of the entire story. They don't detract from the prequels themselves, which are really good in their own right. Not quite up to Frank's masterpieces but pretty close and they do definitely add substantially to the entire Dune epic. For that alone they are "must-haves" in any Dune fan's collection.

After reading "House Atreides" buying "House Harkonnen" was a foregone conclusion. It is a hard book to put down and after a week, I've just past the half way point in the book. I'll write a full review here when I've finished. So far it has been a fantastic read, really gripping. I do have a few gripes though and my pet peeve is Rhombur Vernius' favourite curse "vermillion hells" .... Brian, Kevin, please, if he has to swear, make him do it properly.

House Atreides is a bestseller ! The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, LA Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, US News & World Report, Wall St. Journal, SF Chronicle, international lists in Canada and Australia. It also hit #1 on the amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Waldenbooks, and Locus science fiction bestseller lists and was Bantam Spectra's bestselling hardcover novel for all of 1999.

It was with great excitement that I picked up a copy of "House Atreides" at my local bookshop. I didn't know of the project and was very pleasantly surprised that there was more of Dune ! On the other hand I was skeptical about how good a job anyone other than Frank Herbert could do. As it turned out that although I was not disappointed, it had some flaws. Let me explain.

Many years ago, I was fortunate to find a copy of the now out of print "Dune Encyclopedia" (DE from now on) compiled by Dr Willis E. McNelly. Much of the DE was fleshed out from Frank's own notes and has his "approval". The DE had within it expanded and given life to a multitude of little things with stories and rich histories which were necessarily unexplained in the "Dune Chronicles" and in general went with the flow of the Chronicles.

When I read "House Atreides" I found to my disappointment many things differed from the version of stories in the Encyclopedia. The most major deviations are:

1. Duke Leto's history. To begin with Duke Leto's father, Paulus in "House Atreides" but Minotaurus (Mintor) in The Dune Encyclopedia and Paulos XVIII being Leto's grandfather. Leto's mother in "House Atreides" is Lady Helena whereas in the encyclopedia his mother was Mintor's concubine Bekah who died during childbirth. The events in Leto's life differ completely when comparing "House Atreides" with the Encyclopedia.

2. Duncan Idaho's history. Duncan was born a slave on Giedi Prime in "House Atreides" and escaped to Caladan at the age of 9 and where Leto mentioned of his intention to send him for training with House Ginaz. "House Atreides" ends before this story unfolds further. However, in the Encyclopedia, Duncan was born on Caladan and apprenticed to House Ginaz where he was captured and enslaved on Grumman during a war of Assassins between Houses Ginaz and Moritani. Later, at the age of 22, Duncan was sold to House Harkonnen for slavery on Hagal where he was later rescued by the Atreides.

3. Shaddam IV's history. In "House Atreides" Elrood IX, Shaddam's father, was assassinated by Hasimir Fenring with a slow poison with the full knowledge and complicity of Shaddam. Hasimir had also previously eliminated Shaddam's elder brother (who was first in line to the Throne). In the Encyclopedia although Elrood IX was also assassinated by poison, it was he that was involved in a plot to assassinate Shaddam.

I would have loved to see "House Atreides" and "The Dune Encyclopedia" match each other in detail but I realise two "Dune" products of anyone who isn't Frank Herbert will never be synchronised.

Overall a great read, I couldn't put it down. I was a bit disappointed with the ending until I realised there are more "prequels" to Dune in the pipeline leading up to the events in the "Dune Chronicles".

Military Aviation

I've always had an interest in aviation, especially military aviation during the Second World War. Personal accounts of combat missions by WWII pilots are my favourite, especially those of US Navy Fighting Squadron 17, VF-17, The Jolly Rogers.
As a result I've built a fairly decent collection of books on the subject. I will post detailed descriptions of all the books in my collection and if you like to buy the book for yourself you can do so at Amazon.com.

VF-17 AND RELATED BOOKS

The Jolly Rogers : The Story of Tom Blackburn and Navy Fighting Squadron VF-17

by Tom Blackburn, Eric M. Hammel

Tom Blackburn was the commanding officer of the US Navy's most successful fighter squadron in the Second World War, VF-17, The Jolly Rogers, the first Navy squadron to fly in combat what was arguably the best US fighter aircraft of the war, the Chance Vought F4U Corsair.
VF-17's achievements were impressive, 152 Japanese aircraft shot down, 2 aircraft destroyed on the ground, 5 small cargo ships and 17 troop/supplies barges sunk in just 76 days of combat. No bomber escorted by VF-17 was ever lost and no ship covered by them was ever hit by torpedoes or bombs. VF-17 produced an amazing 13 aces, including Ira "Ike" Kepford the Navy's highest scoring ace at that time with 16 victories.
This book looks at VF-17 from Tom Blackburn's unique perspective as CO. There are many fascinating accounts of tactics and techniques which were developed by Tom and VF-17 during the course of their highy successful tour, including the low level strafing attacks of enemy airfields by escort fighters after their escort duties had been performed successfully, as well as the early high altitude fighter sweep conducted just before an escort mission to surprise enemy fighters as they formed up to intercept the incoming bombers. VF-17 was also the first squadron to fit bomb racks to the Corsair and turning it into a highly successful fighter bomber which continued service in the Korean war and beyond.

Most memorable to me was the mission in which VF-17 performed a precision bombing attack of a whorehouse known to be frequented by high ranking Japanese officers, which destroyed everything around the building but leaving the building itself intact.

If you have any interest at all in VF-17 or US Navy fighter operations and tactics during WWII, this book is a must have, that goes for all of you Hog lovers as well !

THE LUFTWAFFE IN WORLD WAR II

Luftwaffe Fighter Aces

The Jagdflieger and Their Combat Tactics and Techniques
by Mike Spick
An excellent book with a tactical viewpoint of the air war in Europe from the Luftwaffe pilots' perspectives. Packed with fascinating accounts from many Luftwaffe pilots and well known Experten like Gunther Rall, Walter Krupinski, Gerhard Barkhorn, Adolf "Dolfo" Galland, Heinz Baer, Josef "Pips" Priller, Adolf "Addi" Glunz, Erich "Bubi" Hartmann. Night fighter operations are also well covered by the book featuring the night fighter Experten like Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer and Helmut Lent.
The period covered starts from brief accounts during the Spanish Civil War, the beginning and the last days of the 2nd World War. Detailed statistics for each ace (day and night aces presented seperately) such as the JG, ZG or NJG they flew with, their victories, decorations, combat debut, strike rate and their final fates are also presented in appendices following the main text.
Particularly fascinating are accounts of how their tactics evolved as Luftwaffe and allied aircraft and weapons developed and as the course of the war changed and how they stayed alive and continued to gain victories against incredible odds, often outnumbered by huge margins during the the final months of the war. Unlike Allied pilots who rotated out of the combat zone after a tour of duty, these pilots fought till they died or until the war ended and as a result racked up mind boggling victory tallies which will probably never be equalled in any future conflict. Yet another "must have" for the 2nd World War military aviation buff, and equally useful to the serious Warbirds (Interactive Magic Online's multiplayer WWII flight simulation) enthusiast trying to survive the gangbangs of the main arena. My only complaint ...... the book is too short !

As part of the Navy family, it is important that we be aware of our history, and our adversaries.
The Japanese WW II ace pilot, Saburo Sakai died last week. Here is part of his obituary from the 16 Oct, 2000, issue of "Aviation Week & Space Technology."
"Saburo Sakai, Japan's highest scoring ace to survive World War II, died after suffering a heart attack at NAS Atsugi near Tokyo while dining with American military officers. He was 84. Sakai shot down 64 allied aircraft in his combat career, which was interrupted after he was shot in the head and blinded in the right eye in 1942 while attacking U. S. aircraft. After being hit, he flew 560 mi. to his base a Lae, New Guinea, and landed. Sakai returned to combat late in the war as Japan's pool of trained pilots had practically disappeared and he may have shot down the last U. S. bomber to be lost during World War II. Most of his career was spent flying the Mitsubishi A6M Zero-Sen..."BR> His auto-biography, written with Martin Caidin and Fred Saito, is titled "Samurai!" Two events in his life really stuck with me. First, he was in a dog fight with "several" navy pilots. After 45 minutes, he managed to escape his pursuers. Second, the hospital was out of anesthetic when Sakai was admitted. The doctors operated on his right eye to remove the shrapnel WITH OUT anesthetic.

Military / Techno Thrillers

My favourite author on this genre is Tom Clancy and I also have books by Larry Bond. Currently in the early parts of Tom Clancy's "The Bear and The Dragon" but this and "Executive Orders" seem to be much easier to put down than some of his earlier books. I particularly like "Hunt for Red October", "Red Storm Rising" and all the other early titles.
I'll have to find time to put up descriptions / reviews of these books in my collection. Soon I hope :) !

Darwinian / Evolutionary Medicine

Fascinating alternative look at the scourges of modern humans, heart disease and cancer, and that these diseases amongst others, are caused by germs (bacteria and virii). Just like recently discovered that peptic (stomach) ulcers were actually caused by Helicobacter pylori bacterium (and are often treated with antibiotics) and cervical cancer has been traced to the human papilloma virus (also causes genital warts). Who knows, what other "non-infectious" disease, are actually incorrectly identified infectious diseases.

The Volvo 240 series

My father's first car was a Volvo 122, and since then he has had a 144S, 244DL (1979) and currently drives a 240DL (1985). I've caught the Volvo bug too and was driving the 1979 244DL until it was sold in November 2000. I now drive a 240SE (1993) which I bought the same time the 244DL was sold. It's a 2.3 Litre, fuel injection, light metallic green beauty. If you are serious about your Volvo (otherwise you wouldn't be reading this :) and would like to maintain it yourself, then these books are indispensible. The Haynes book may be a bit light on the electronic ignition systems but is much cheaper.
